Get up to $60 off (sometimes up to $100) when you buy a smart thermostat in California
A smart thermostat learns your schedule and turns your heat or AC down when you're not home, which lowers your PG&E or SoCalGas bill. Golden State Rebates gives you the discount right at the register — you don't mail anything in.
What you get
- Up to $60 off most ENERGY STAR® certified smart thermostats
- $40 off the Amazon Smart Thermostat
- Up to $100 off select models during limited-time promotions (one runs through May 27, 2026) [Source: goldenstaterebates.com/goldenstaterebates/rebate/instant-rebates/ (accessed 2026-05-17)]
- Coupons expire July 1, 2026 unless the product page says otherwise [Source: goldenstaterebates.com/goldenstaterebates/rebates/smart-thermostats/ (accessed 2026-05-17)]
Who qualifies
You qualify if all of these are true:
- You're a residential customer of PG&E, SoCalGas, SCE, or SDG&E (the bill is in your name at the install address)
- Your home has either (a) AC + a gas furnace, or (b) a heat pump
- You're replacing an existing non-smart thermostat (new construction doesn't count)
- The model you buy is on the Qualified Products List
- You install it within 60 days of buying it
Renters: you can do this if you're paying the utility bill and your landlord lets you swap the thermostat.
How to apply
- Pick a model from the Qualified Products List.
- Go to a Participating Retail Store (Home Depot, Lowe's, and many local hardware stores qualify) — or order online via the Golden State Rebates store.
- The discount comes off at checkout. No forms, no waiting.
- Install within 60 days.
Common pitfalls
- Funds run out. Program is first-come, first-served and can end without notice. [Source: goldenstaterebates.com/goldenstaterebates/rebates/smart-thermostats/ (accessed 2026-05-17)]
- Not all stores participate. Check the retailer list before you go.
- Buying online from a non-participating site (random Amazon listings, etc.) won't trigger the discount — use the Golden State Rebates store link.
- Water heater rebates are paused under this program as of January 2026, but smart thermostat rebates are still active. [Source: switchison.org (accessed 2026-05-17)]
