✅ Last verified 2026-05-17. Nevada County Library hotspot lending is still running. Same loan rules as prior years.
Free internet in a box — borrow a hotspot from your library
If you have a Nevada County Library card, you can check out a portable Wi-Fi hotspot for 14 days at no cost. Plug it in, turn it on, and up to 10 of your devices (phone, laptop, tablet, smart TV, kids' Chromebooks) get on the internet — anywhere a T-Mobile or Verizon signal reaches. Who can borrow one
- Adults and teens with a Nevada County Library card in good standing (no big fines, card not expired).
- Youth, Limited, and Educator card holders cannot check out hotspots. If your card is one of these types, ask the librarian about upgrading. [Source: nevadacountyca.gov/3138/Check-Out-a-Hotspot (accessed 2026-05-17)]
- Don't have a card yet? Walk into any branch with a photo ID and proof of a Nevada County address (a piece of mail works). It's free.
What you get
- One pocket-sized hotspot device + charger in a kit.
- Unlimited data for 14 days, anywhere in the U.S. with T-Mobile or Verizon coverage.
- Connect up to 10 devices at once.
- Simple printed instructions in the kit.
How to get one
- Search the library catalog at library.nevadacountyca.gov for the word
hotspot.
- Place a hold on one and pick the branch you want to pick it up at.
- When it comes in, you'll get a call or email. Pick it up within the hold window.
- Pickup branches: Bear River, Grass Valley, Madelyn Helling (Nevada City), Penn Valley, and Truckee. [Source: nevadacountyca.gov/3138/Check-Out-a-Hotspot (accessed 2026-05-17)]
How to return it
- Drop it (kit and all parts) in the library book drop at any branch. No need to wait in line.
- Return it on time. Overdue hotspots are shut off remotely until returned. [Source: nevadacountyca.gov/3138/Check-Out-a-Hotspot (accessed 2026-05-17)]
Common pitfalls
- You can't renew it. 14 days, then it goes back. If you still need internet, place a new hold — but there may be a waitlist.
- One per household at a time. Only one hotspot per cardholder.
- No signal = no internet. If your home has poor T-Mobile/Verizon coverage, the hotspot won't help. Ask the library if you can test one before relying on it.
- Lost or broken parts: Call the library right away. Don't just return a broken kit silently — replacement charges can apply.
If a hotspot won't cover you
- Free Internet — see the TechEmpower guide on home internet options (Spectrum Internet Assist, AT&T Access, Xfinity Internet Essentials all still run in 2026; the federal ACP $30/month benefit ended in mid-2024 and has not returned).
- T-Mobile Project 10Million — free hotspot + 200 GB/year for 5 years for K-12 households that qualify; see that resource page.
- Mobile Beacon — $10/month unlimited hotspot data for verified nonprofits.
Where to get help
- Library reference desk — any branch. Staff will walk you through placing the hold and using the device.
- Madelyn Helling Library (Nevada City): (530) 265-7050
- Grass Valley Library: (530) 273-4117
