Get food help fast with CalFresh (3-day Expedited Service)

CalFresh is California's food assistance program (SNAP). If money is very tight right now, you can get help within 3 days of applying. This is called Expedited Service.
Note: BenefitsCal is the state portal where you apply. It handles CalFresh (food), Medi-Cal (health coverage), and CalWORKs (cash aid) in one place. This page focuses on CalFresh emergency food benefits.

Who qualifies for the 3-day food benefit

You may get CalFresh within 3 days if you meet any one of these:
  1. Your household has $150 or less in gross monthly income and $100 or less in liquid resources (cash, bank accounts, recent lump-sum payments).
  1. Your combined income + liquid resources are less than your monthly rent or mortgage + utilities.
  1. Someone in your household is a migrant or seasonal farmworker who is destitute and has $100 or less in liquid resources.
"Gross income" = all the money you bring in before taxes or deductions.
"Liquid resources" = cash on hand, checking and savings accounts, savings certificates, and one-time payments like a tax refund or back Social Security.

How much you get

Regular CalFresh amounts depend on household size and income. Expedited Service gives you your first month's benefits within 3 days; after that you stay on regular CalFresh as long as you qualify. Benefits load onto a Golden State Advantage (EBT) card you use like a debit card at grocery stores and farmers' markets.
Your benefits start from the date you apply — so apply the same day you decide to, even if you don't have every document yet.

How to apply (fastest path)

  1. Go to benefitscal.com and create an account.
  1. Fill out the CalFresh application. You only need a name, address, and signature to start the clock.
  1. Upload photos of your ID and any income proof from your phone — no scanner needed.
  1. Submit. You'll get an interview within 3 days (usually by phone).
  1. If approved, your EBT card arrives by mail in about a week.
Other ways to apply:
  • Phone: 1-877-847-3663 (CalFresh statewide info line)
  • In person: Your county Human Services / Social Services office
  • GetCalFresh.org: A free helper site run by Code for America that walks you through the BenefitsCal application

Common pitfalls

  • Don't wait to "have everything ready." Submit your application even with missing info. Benefits backdate to the day you apply.
  • Answer the interview call. Counties try a few times; if you miss them all, your application can be denied. Save the number after the first call.
  • Tell them you need expedited service. Counties are supposed to screen for it automatically, but mention "I think I qualify for 3-day expedited CalFresh" on the application and at your interview.
  • Immigration status: You don't have to be a U.S. citizen to apply for your eligible household members. Applying for a child's CalFresh does not affect parents' immigration cases. Public charge rules do not count CalFresh against you.
  • Students: Most college students need to meet an extra rule (working 20 hrs/week, having a child, or being in a qualifying program). Ask the county worker — exemptions are broader than people think.

Where to get help

  • GetCalFresh.org — free online application helper, also helps with the interview.
  • 211 — call or text 211 in California for local food and benefits help.
  • Nevada County Health & Human Services Agency, 950 Maidu Ave, Nevada City, (530) 265-1340 — apply in person or get help with a stuck application.
  • Local food banks while you wait — see the "Food Bank" resources on this site for same-day groceries.
