What you get
Slack is a team chat tool. Messages are organized into channels by team or project, and you can share files, run video huddles, and connect other apps. If your nonprofit qualifies, you can use a paid Slack plan for free or at a steep discount.
If your workspace has 250 members or fewer:
- Pro plan: free (normally about $8.75 per user per month)
- Business+ plan: 85% off
If your workspace has more than 250 members:
- Pro plan: 85% off
- Business+ plan: 85% off
The Pro plan removes the 90-day message history limit, adds unlimited apps, group huddles, and SSO with Google. Business+ adds SAML SSO, data exports, and a 99.99% uptime guarantee. [Source: slack.com/help/articles/115003205446 (accessed 2026-05-17)]
Who qualifies
You need to be a registered nonprofit. In the U.S., that means a 501(c)(3) with a current IRS determination letter. Outside the U.S., a local charity registration or TechSoup partner validation works.
These groups do NOT qualify:
- Religious organizations, churches, faith-based groups where the main purpose is worship or religious instruction
- Schools and colleges (they have a separate Slack for Education program)
- Hospitals and healthcare providers
- Government agencies
- Political parties, lobbying groups, labor unions
- Private foundations
- Any group that discriminates by race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, age, or national origin

How to apply
- Set up a Slack workspace at slack.com if you don't have one yet. It can be on the free plan to start.
- Get TechSoup-validated. Go to techsoup.org and create a free account for your organization. They'll ask for your EIN and a copy of your IRS determination letter. Validation usually takes 2–14 business days.
- Apply through Slack. Once validated, go to my.slack.com/nonprofit while signed in as a workspace owner or admin. Fill out the form with your legal name, address, website, and a short description of what your nonprofit does.
- Submit tax documents by emailing your IRS determination letter to tax@slack.com with your workspace URL in the subject line.
- Wait for approval. Slack typically applies the discount within 3 business days after your documents are confirmed.
Common pitfalls
- Don't pay first, then apply. If you've already upgraded to a paid plan, contact Slack support before applying so they can refund and re-bill at the discounted rate.
- One workspace per org. The discount applies to a single workspace. If you run multiple workspaces, you'll need to consolidate or apply separately for each (and each goes through review).
- Validation takes time. TechSoup verification is the slowest step. Start it before you need Slack in a hurry.
- Annual billing. The 85% discount applies to annual billing. Monthly billing is not eligible.
- Renewal. The discount renews automatically each year, but Slack may re-verify your status. Keep your IRS determination letter current.
