⚠️ Status (May 2026): NID's rebate page says rebates are currently unavailable and tells customers to "check back in May 2026" for an update. As of 2026-05-17 the page still shows that notice. Call before buying anything — you may be told funding has reopened, or you may be told to wait. [Source: nidwater.com/incentives-rebates (accessed 2026-05-17)]

What this is

Nevada Irrigation District (NID) is the water provider for much of Nevada and Placer counties. When funded, NID gives cash rebates to its customers for changes that save water: low-flow toilets, turf removal, and raw-water storage tanks.

Who qualifies

  • You must be an NID customer (you pay an NID water bill).
  • Toilet and turf rebates: residential treated-water customers.
  • Storage tank rebate: NID raw-water (irrigation) customers.
  • Rebates are first-come, first-served while funding lasts.

What you can get (when funding is open)

Toilet rebate — up to $100

Replace an old toilet with a new high-efficiency toilet rated 1.28 gallons per flush or less (look for the WaterSense label). NID says this can save about 13,000 gallons of water a year for a typical household. [Source: nidwater.com/nid-offers-a-rebate-for-water-efficient-toilets (accessed 2026-05-17)]

Turf removal rebate — $1.00 per square foot, up to $1,000

Remove a lawn and replace it with water-wise landscaping (mulch, drought-tolerant plants, etc.).
  • You must remove at least 250 square feet of grass.
  • If your whole lawn is smaller than 250 sq ft, you have to remove all of it.
  • Maximum payout per residential meter: $1,000 (so 1,000 sq ft or more gets you the full amount). [Source: nidwater.com/incentives-rebates (accessed 2026-05-17)]

Raw water storage tank rebate

For irrigation customers. NID raw water is not guaranteed during outages, so they help pay for a backup tank. Minimum tank size: 500 gallons. The exact dollar amount is set per program cycle — ask when you apply. [Source: nidwater.com/incentives-rebates (accessed 2026-05-17)]

How to apply

Always call before you spend money. If you buy the toilet, tear out the lawn, or install the tank before NID approves your application, you may not get the rebate.
  1. Call the Water Efficiency Technician: 530-273-6185 ext. 1244 (or email margheritak@nidwater.com).
  1. Ask whether the rebate you want is funded right now.
  1. If yes, ask them to send the application and the terms-and-conditions sheet.
  1. Get pre-approval before buying the toilet, removing turf, or installing the tank.
  1. Save every receipt, every photo (before / during / after), and the model number.
  1. Submit your application with receipts and photos.

Common pitfalls

  • Buying first, applying second. Pre-approval first — every time.
  • Funds run out mid-year. First-come, first-served. Don't wait until November.
  • Wrong toilet model. Must be 1.28 gpf or less, WaterSense-labeled.
  • Turf project under 250 sq ft. It won't qualify unless your entire lawn is smaller than that.
  • Not an NID customer. If your water bill is from a different agency (e.g., a city water department or PCWA), this program does not apply to you.

Freshness update (2026-05-30): We re-checked NID's rebate page at the end of May 2026 (the date the page told customers to "check back"). The rebates are still listed as currently unavailable — funding had not reopened as of 2026-05-30. The program details above (toilet up to $100, turf $1/sq ft up to $1,000, raw-water storage tank) are still what NID offers when funded, so it's worth a quick call to 530-273-6185 ext. 1244 to ask if anything has reopened. Don't buy a toilet or tear out a lawn expecting a rebate until NID confirms funding and pre-approves you.
