Last verified 2026-05-17. CalFresh EBT online purchasing is active in all 50 states. California has roughly 29+ participating retailers plus delivery apps.
What this is
You can use your CalFresh EBT card to buy groceries online — for delivery or pickup — at many stores. You'll need your PIN to pay, just like in a store. [Source: cdss.ca.gov/ebt-online (accessed 2026-05-17)]
What EBT covers online: eligible food only. You cannot pay delivery fees, service fees, tips, or taxes with CalFresh — you'll need a debit/credit card on file for those charges.

How to set it up
- Find a store that delivers to your ZIP — try a few; coverage varies block by block.
- Create an account on the retailer's website or app.
- Add your EBT card in the payment section. You'll enter the 16-digit number on the front of your card.
- Shop and check out. Mark eligible food items. At checkout you'll enter your 4-digit EBT PIN to confirm the charge.
- Have a backup payment method. Delivery fees, tips, service fees, and taxes need a debit or credit card.
Common pitfalls
- Delivery fees aren't free. A $30 grocery order may cost $8-15 more in fees. If you're tight on cash, pickup is often cheaper or free.
- Tipping is optional but expected on most apps. Budget for it or set it to $0 if you can't.
- PIN errors lock you out. Three wrong tries on most sites and you'll need to wait or call EBT customer service (1-877-328-9677).
- Not every item is SNAP-eligible. Hot prepared food, vitamins, household supplies, and pet food are not covered — those charge to your backup card.
- Some "EBT-accepting" stores only do pickup, not delivery. Read the fine print before you fill a cart.

Freshness update (2026-05-30): CalFresh online purchasing is still active across California (Amazon, Walmart, Target, Albertsons/Kroger/Save Mart families, plus Instacart, DoorDash, and Uber Eats). Two notes for 2026: (1) Some other states added new SNAP food restrictions starting January 1, 2026, but California's CalFresh purchasing rules are unchanged — you can still buy the same eligible foods online. (2) Watch out for scam apps: a fake "EBT edge – food stamps" app charges $4.99/week. The official California EBT app is FIS ebtEDGE and it is FREE — the state will never charge you to check your balance.
