Program renamed. The 2021 "Free Essential Data" launch announcement in the linked blog post is the older branding. TextNow's current free wireless plan is the Free Flex Plan, which carries the same idea forward — free unlimited nationwide talk and text, plus a small monthly data allowance, on TextNow's own MVNO (originally on Sprint, now on T-Mobile's network).
What you actually get (Free Flex Plan)
- $0 / month — no contract, no credit check.
- Unlimited nationwide talk and text over cellular (a real phone number, not just app-to-app).
- 550 MB of cellular data each month, plus free data that doesn't count against that cap when you use a small list of "essential" apps — currently email, maps, and rideshare apps (Uber, Lyft).
- Day Passes for unlimited data when you actually need it: $2.99 buys 2 GB / 24 hours. Buy one only on days you'll use it.
What it costs to start
- Physical SIM: $3.99 one-time, shipped to you.
- eSIM: free, activates immediately on a compatible iPhone or Android phone — no waiting on shipping.
You need an unlocked phone (most phones bought outright, or paid-off carrier phones, are unlocked).
Who this is actually for
- Someone who needs a working US phone number for job applications, school, doctors, and benefits offices, but can't afford a monthly bill.
- Someone who already has home or library Wi-Fi for the heavy stuff (video, downloads) and only needs cellular as a backup.
- Someone who got cut off from Lifeline / ACP after the federal Affordable Connectivity Program ended in mid-2024 and needs a free fallback.
Who it's not great for
- Heavy data users — 550 MB runs out fast if you stream video or music on cellular. Buy a Day Pass on those days or stay on Wi-Fi.
- People who need guaranteed reception in weak-signal areas — TextNow rides on T-Mobile, so coverage matches T-Mobile's map.
How to sign up
- Download the TextNow app (iOS App Store / Google Play) or go to textnow.com.
- Pick a phone number (you can choose the area code).
- Choose eSIM (free, instant) or order a physical SIM ($3.99).
- Activate, and your line is live.
